Name: Amanda Thomson
Age: 50 (just!)
Job title: CEO and Founder of Thomson & Scott
If you were stuck on a desert island, and you could only take 3 things to support your business, what would they be?
-
My team – does that count as 1? I’d need my team wherever I go.
-
Strong WiFi - that’s a must
-
A deep-tissue massager – to keep me feeling zen
What are 3 apps you can’t live without for your business?
-
Shopify
-
Instagram
-
LinkedIn
I know they are all straightforward, but they are entirely necessary.
3 best business books you’ve ever read:
Make it stand out
Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
-
Shoe Dog by Phil Knight - this book provides an unvarnished story of how Phil Knight started Nike and turned it into a £30 billion global company.
-
The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell - this book explains and analyses the 'tipping point', that magic moment when ideas, trends and social behaviour cross a threshold, tip and spread like wildfire
-
Disrupted by Dan Lyons - hailed by the Los Angeles Times as "the best book about Silicon Valley," takes readers inside the maddening world of fad-chasing venture capitalists, sales bros, social climbers, and sociopaths at today's tech startups.
3 best business podcasts:
I don’t really listen to many podcasts, but occasionally How I Built This with Guy Raz on NPR. And I loved Louis Theroux’s lockdown podcasts but not business related obviously.
Which three people would you take with you to your island?
-
Elon Musk
-
Sheryl Sandberg
-
Melissa McCarthy
What’s one piece of advice you’d like to give our readers?
Shit happens. No one dies (usually). Keep putting one foot in front of another. That and always giving the extra one percent can make all the difference. You can change the world starting with a blank piece of paper but you actually have to start.
